9 First Date Mistakes That Can Ruin Your Chance of a 2nd

When it comes to online dating, first impressions matter more than ever. After weeks of swiping, liking, and messaging, the real test begins on that first date.

Here’s the catch — your #1 match is probably someone else’s top choice too. That means there’s competition, and how you show up on date one can determine if there’s ever a date two.

As America’s Top Online Dating Expert and The Digital Matchmaker®, I’ve coached thousands of singles on how to transform first meetings into lasting relationships. And I’ve seen it all: the awkward moments, the avoidable mistakes, and the stories that make singles wonder why the spark fizzled so quickly.

Think of online dating like an auction. Multiple people may be “bidding” for someone’s attention, and the person who is the most present, authentic, and engaging is the one who leaves a lasting impression.

To help you get there, I’ve outlined nine of the most common first date mistakes — and what to do instead — so you can move from “nice to meet you” to “let’s do this again.”

    1. Flirting with Disaster

The mistake: Letting your attention wander. Some singles can’t resist flirting with the server or letting their eyes drift around the room. It may feel harmless, but it makes your date feel unimportant.

What to do instead: Focus on the person across from you. Listen actively, ask thoughtful questions, and keep your phone and your eyes on your date. Attention is one of the biggest signs of respect.

    2. Dressing for the Bedroom

The mistake: Baring too much, too soon. Wearing an overly revealing outfit can send the wrong message and create pressure before a real connection has formed.

What to do instead: Think confident and classy. Choose something that makes you feel attractive but still leaves a little mystery. Save the sexy looks for when you’re ready to deepen the relationship.

    3. Forgetting the Food & Beverage Rule

The mistake: Cutting corners. I’ve heard stories of men inviting women for coffee and refusing to buy coffee, or suggesting extravagant restaurants they can’t afford. Both can ruin the vibe.

What to do instead: If you set the date, own it. A coffee date means buying coffee. A dinner date means being prepared to order dinner. Choose places within your budget and focus on connection, not the price tag.

    4. Blabbing About the Ex

Talking about your ex is one of the most common first date mistakes — and one of the quickest ways to shut down attraction. Singles often think they’re being open by comparing heartbreaks, but oversharing sends a message that you’re not over your former boo.

Don’t go down memory lane. Keep your conversation focused in the moment, and share stories about your last vacation, a funny hobby, or your favorite hiking trail. Save the ex talk for your or your best friend. A first date should feel light, not like a therapy session.

    5. Glued to Your Phone

The mistake: Treating your phone like a welcome accessory. Scrolling or texting during the date signals that you’re distracted, or worse, waiting for someone better to message you.

What to do instead: Silence your phone and put it away. Give your date your full attention. Being present is one of the best ways to build trust and make a lasting impression.

    6. Becoming Digital Friends Too Fast

The mistake: Sending a Facebook request or Instagram follow before you even finish the first date. Jumping into someone’s digital life too soon can feel invasive.

What to do instead: Let the connection unfold naturally. Focus on how you feel in person, and save the friend requests for later — once there’s mutual interest and momentum.

    7. Not Doing Your Homework

The mistake: Forgetting the details from their profile. Asking why someone was never married when they’ve been divorced twice, or mixing up their profession, shows you’re not taking the process seriously.

What to do instead: Remember to review their dating profile before you meet. Jot down a few key details to bring up in conversation, without revealing your cheat sheet.

    8. Assuming You’re in an Instant Relationship

The mistake: Projecting to the future before your appetizers arrive will backfire. Even if your chemistry is strong, talking about exclusivity or marriage too soon can feel overwhelming, and send your date running for the hills.

What to do instead: Stay present and enjoy each moment, share laughs, and suggest a second date if things go well. Let the relationship slowly build to sometthing that has the potential of being lasting.

    9. Writing Off the “Dating Duds”

The mistake: Don’t be the date who’s badly behaved and walk out the moment you don’t feel instant sparks.

What to do instead: Keep an open mind, and realize it’s just one hour of your day, or one of of 8,760 hours in a year. Sure, there are plenty of one-and-done dates, but if you and your date don’t click, perhaps they’d have someone to introduce you to.
